Groundwater Sustainability in the San Joaquin Valley

Where Does Conservation Fit In?

Our Executive Director, along with partners from The Nature Conservancy, published an article that outlines a vision for how strategically restoring habitat on idle farmland can lead to multiple benefits.

“Restoring habitat in retired farmland could reduce water demand and provide ecosystem services for farmers and local communities. In some areas of California, as a result of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), it is likely that some agricultural land will need to be converted to alternative land uses. In this article from California Agriculture, our Executive Director and partners at The Nature Conservancy cast a vision for how restoring some of those lands to habitat can generate multiple benefits for farmers and San Joaquin Valley communities, in addition to helping meet groundwater sustainability.”
